Tuttle Learning Chinese Characters Vol 1: The only thing “revolutionary” about this book is the amount of time and space used to utterly confuse, befuddle, and confound. Honestly, it is the silliest thing ever written – using dwarfs, fairies, giants, and robots … NO, I’m NOT kidding. The system is so silly and complicated, it takes ten times LONGER than just memorizing the dull, rote, old-fashion way. Was truly excited to get this book because character memorization is my weakest point. Thrilled with the prospect of a fantastically new and easy system, I was quickly (and sadly) brought back down to earth: There are no quick easy fixes. But (as P. T. Barnum famously said) “There is a sucker born every minute.” And I’d suggest not getting suckered into this one.

You can tell after just a few chapters the amount of time and care that has been put in to this book – from the presence of a stroke order for every character, to the subtle (and incredibly timely) reminders by the authors about the relevance and meaning of the archetypes that are used to guide pronunciation.
I had never imagined being able to learn 120 characters in 8 days… and to be honest I’ve slowed down a bit since then… but the reality of how much you learn, and how comparatively effortless it is to learn, really is surprising. I’ve never felt anything more than mild disdain for a language book in the past, but this book is actually fun… fun enough to make you look forward to doing the tests… and for me, that’s remarkable!

This is hands down the most effective method for learning chinese characters and memorizing them with ease. For those in the know, the author uses time tested memory techniques incorporating a visual mneumonic method that lets the reader memorize not just the character but also the tones and meaning. I hope the book sells enough copies that the author will do a Volume II!
